Security has been beefed up within and around Ladoke Akinola University of Technology, Ogbomoso over moves by students of the institution to embark on protest due to the more than one percent increase of tuition fee by the school’s Governing Council Wednesday. The council reportedly released a circular Wednesday announcing the increase which provides that Medical, Nursing and Biomedical students will henceforth pay N300,000 while Engineering students will pay N250,000. Those of the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Applied Sciences are to pay N200,000. But a student of the university who spoke to Daily Times exclusively said that the increase, which he described ‘arbitrary’ is a clear indication that the management of the university prefer trouble to peace in the campus and vowed that the increase will be resisted. “The management of LAUTECH has started beefing up security in and around the campus because they know quite well that their action is insensitive and wicked. You cannot just wake up and decide to increase school fees without considering the effect it will have on students. “The increase in school fess which we learnt of late Wednesday confirms what we have been saying that management of LAUTECH love trouble instead of peace. How can you raise school fees by 100 percent in a country where parents are finding it difficult to meet daily needs? “The action is the height of insensitivity and impunity by the school management. They have always concerned themselves with how to extort money and more money from students without thinking or making deliberate efforts to improve learning environment but this time there will be a huge showdown as we are determined more than ever to resist this wickedness,” the student who pleaded not to be named told Daily Times. The current increase is to affect all students from 100 to 400 Levels. According to a statement signed by J. A Agboola, Secretary of LAUTECH Council which Daily Times is in possession of, the decision to increase the school fees was reached on Thursday 5th July and released today. Before this increase, indigenous students of LAUTECH paid N63,500 while non indigenes paid N72,500. However, 120,000 was paid by indigenous students currently in 100 level while those from other states paid N150,000.
